A WATERY'I'AI,I,]
A few years back I looked after a neighbours cldcr ly l.atrlltlor ovcr tlrc New Year
holiday. Come Dec 3l I took the rather arthritic old lrourrtl orrl lirr its cvening
constitutional and as it was late walked around sornc rallrcr crpcnsivc lrousing which
surrounded the local RAF Quarters to see the valious Ncrv Ycars livc parties.
Various self styled "celebrities" lived in these dwellirrgs arrtl sorne cluite busy
celebrations were in full swing. One particularly large rnock ludor'/(iothic/Regency
style Wimpey construction had many expensive cars outsidc arrd a very enthusiastic
bash going on inside.
The house and environs were well lit which didn't really catclr rny attention
until a slight tug on the lead caused me to turn to see Angus raise his poft rear
undercarriage and direct a stream of lukewarm liquid straight at a floor mounted
lkW floodlight.
I watched the liquid make its way downwards and splash gently on the glass.
At this point there was an enormous blue flash and thunderous explosion. The lights
went out everywhere. Temporarily blinded I heard a shrill screeching from the
mechanism of the retractable dog lead followed by a smaller bang and bits of plastic
from the shredded casing hitting rne.
The nrusic was replaced by silence and then much swearing and sounds of breakage
from inside the (now dark) house so I felt it best if I made my way nonchalantly
away trying to hide what was left of the dog lead under my coat.
On my way out of the close I asked a passer-by if the had seen an aged Lab, they
said "No" but a dog they had assumed was a young whippet had passed therrr at
some considerable speed heading down the road. About half a mile away I found
Angus with his head firmly stuck in a privet hedge (the rest was sticking out, he
wasn't the brightest of dogs).
Dragging him out revealed one shivering but otherwise not noticeable harrned dog
except that any attempt to inspect his nether regions was met with that woebegone
look Labradors specialise in.
Never again in the several years he lived there could anyone persuade Angus to go
down that road again.
This story was sent to one of Mick Peach's engineers who was asking "hrnu good is
the watertight seal on out.side quartz halogen lantps? " Ed
