up the spine, which is the Tree of Life. Therefore Gilgamesh (the Higher Self) has to
contest with the Scorpion-men (Lower Self) at the end of the Earth (the lowest point
reached by the Soul in its descent to
the physical plane). The scorpion depicts the blandishments of sense-desires which bind
the Soul to the physical plane.
Three days after death the Soul is weighed in the balance (of Libra). The virtuous are
guided across the Chinvat Bridge from the Lower Self to the Higher by a beautiful
maiden (Virgo the Virgin Intuition in man). The wicked have to expiate their sins (burn
out their desires on the Lower planes of the astral or heaven world).
