Table 8.2.4 shows the d<strong>is</strong>tribution of physicians among some service providers. Those<br />
reg<strong>is</strong>tered physicians who are not actually working are mostly on vacation (home or<br />
abroad). The total number of physicians reg<strong>is</strong>tered in the <strong>Egypt</strong>ian Medical Syndicate <strong>is</strong><br />
144,354 whereas those working in MOHP and other public health facilities number 75,314.<br />
The difference between the sets of figures <strong>is</strong> the number of physicians working in police<br />
and army, or those with private careers or already retired. Physicians working in the SMC<br />
are originally MOHP or with other public health facilities (1,196), very few having contracts<br />
(114) or being newly employed (1,205).<br />

Table 8.2.5 presents the d<strong>is</strong>tribution of beds by governorate according to health<br />
provider. Regarding private sector beds, the table shows a marked d<strong>is</strong>crepancy between<br />
governorates such as Cairo (33,489 beds), Giza (12,127 beds) and Alex (13,347 beds)<br />
and other governorates such as Luxor (34 beds), Fayoum (345 beds), South Sinai (40<br />
beds), North Sinai (50 beds), New Valley (36 beds) and Matrouh (12 beds).<br />
