By financial year 2001/2002, the drug consumption in <strong>Egypt</strong> was approximately LE87 per<br />
capita (at retail prices), having increased from LE43 in 1991 to LE87 in 2001. The real<br />
number <strong>is</strong> slightly higher due to imported non-reg<strong>is</strong>tered pharmaceuticals allowed for<br />
approved personal use.<br />

In terms of volume, drug consumption has increased from 16 to 19 units per capita. In a<br />
comparative study, the average number of drugs prescribed per outpatient encounter <strong>is</strong><br />
3.5 items per prescription.<br />
Drug consumption falls into two main areas of private and public sectors. The private<br />
sector consumes approximately 60% (LE3.6 billion) of the total consumption, with the<br />
remaining 40% (LE2.2 billion) attributed to the governmental sector.<br />
