The head of the Government, the Prime Minister,
is appointed by the President and approved by the
Riigikogu.
Estonia joined the European Union on the 1st of May
2004 together with nine other new member states.
Estonia has 6 representatives in the European
Parliament. The Estonian Commissioner siim kallas
is the Vice President of the European Commission
responsible for Administrative Affairs, Audit and
Anti-Fraud.
The national currency of Estonia is the kroon
(abbreviation EEk), which was introduced on
20 June 1992. The smaller unit is called the sent, and
1 kroon = 100 sents. The Estonian kroon is pegged to
the Euro; 1 EUR = 15.64664 EEk. According to current
predictions (as of spring 2007), Estonia will join the
Euro zone in 2010. The Euro and other currencies
are not accepted in shops, etc., but in most places
prices are shown in Euros in preparation for joining
the Euro zone.
Major foreign currencies can easily be exchanged
in banks and exchange offices. There are exchange
offices in the port of Tallinn, at the airport, the
railway station and at almost every step in the centre
of the city.
