you must present to your employer. A father<br />
has a right to be granted 14 days additional<br />
childcare leave during the pregnancy leave<br />
of the mother or within two months after the<br />
birth of the child.<br />
Pregnant women receive health insurance<br />
from the 12 th week of pregnancy. If you are<br />
not insured before pregnancy, you should<br />
go to the local department of the EHIF with<br />
your passport and a doctor’s note certifying<br />
pregnancy.<br />
The parental benefit is paid to the parent that<br />
stays at home with the child. The parental<br />
benefit is paid after the end of the maternity<br />
benefit. Together the maternity benefit and<br />
the parental benefit are paid as of January<br />
2006 for a period of 455 days. Non-working<br />
parents receive the parental benefit for 14<br />
months from childbirth. Fathers have a right<br />
to parental benefits starting from 6 months<br />
after the birth of the child. The amount of the<br />
benefit depends on the parent’s income in<br />
the previous calendar year that is calculated<br />
on the basis of the social taxes paid in<br />
<strong>Estonia</strong>. Those, who did not receive any<br />
taxable income in <strong>Estonia</strong> in the previous<br />

calendar year, receive the parental benefit<br />
according to the monthly rate of the benefit.<br />
In the year 2007 the monthly rate for parental<br />
benefit is 2690 EEk. The maximum amount of<br />
parental benefit that is paid in one month is<br />
21 624 EEk in 2007.<br />
A parent who takes a child care vacation and<br />
is raising children under the age of 3 receives<br />
a child-care allowance.<br />
A monthly child allowance of 300 EEk is paid<br />
to one of the parents of a child under the age<br />
of 16, and in case the child continues his/her<br />
studies, the child allowance is paid until the<br />
child’s 19th birthday.<br />
At the beginning of each school year, school<br />
support in the amount of 450 EEk is paid<br />
for children who attend school. Additional<br />
allowances are paid to families with three or<br />
more children.<br />
Apart from the maternity benefit, these<br />
benefits are paid by the social Insurance<br />
Board. Most of these benefits are available<br />
to you even if your children live in a different<br />
EU country.
