Thank you for your kind words regarding my doctoral dissertation and thank you for the time you have put in to this dialogue with me. For me as well this exchange has been interesting, informative and beneficial. I have not yet had the opportunity to read your Reply Part II, though I skimmed it. I would, though, very much like to express some thoughts regarding Part I of your Reply. There are four main arguments of yours in this Reply that I must comment on: 1.] The Black Sheep/White Sheep reference in the hadith I quoted has no racial reference and no ‗corruption of Islam‘ is hinted at there. Rather, the reference is only to the positive, Qur‘an-predicted phenomenon of non-Arabs in general entering Islam, to their benefit and, presumably, to the benefit of the religion itself. 2.] The invisible, incorporeal god that now characterizes orthodox Muslim theology preceded al-Ghazzali by centuries. This fact is proved, you argue, by the debate which I document in my dissertation among the Sahaba regarding the Prophet‘s Ru‘ya or Vision of Allah. The fact that some of the Black Arabs allegedly appeared on the ‗negative‘ side of the debate is, you suggest, proof that the invisible, incorporeal, non-anthropomorphic deity of the Persian al-Ghazzali actually goes back to some of the Black Arabs themselves. 3.] The whole idea of anthropomorphism is ‗pre-scientific‘. In your version of world history, which allegedly ―shows a progression of human belief and knowledge from its early superstitious and pagan understanding of the planet and world we live in to a more rational, scientific, and educated understanding of ourselves and our world,‖ anthropomorphism is such a pagan and superstitious understanding that characterizes the pre-scientific world of the intellectual brutes of yesterday. Our more modern acquisition of education, science and reason forces an abandonment of anthropomorphism. This, you say, is History 101. 4.] You further suggest that it was the Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle who ―ushered in an age of reason‖ and helped lead humanity – the intellectual brutes of Ancient Greece, India, Africa, and Asia – away from their pagan and idolatrous ways. The Qur‘an, the Holy Prophet, and the Muslim Ummah all espoused the same type of god as did the Greek philosophers, and therefore further helped bring the world out of the dark ages of superstitious and pagan anthropomorphism. 58
Your positions were well laid out and articulated Bro Mubaashir. It is no mystery why you are hailed by many as one of the chief articulators of Imam W.D. Mohammed‘s interpretation of Islam. If I were not a professional Historian of Religion, I myself would have been totally persuaded by your above presentation. As the case is, however, I am an Historian of Religion and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad said it well: ―Of all of our studies, History is most attractive and best qualified to reward our research.‖ A better familiarity with the relevant history would, I suggest, bring clarity to your Points 1 and 2 and force an abandonment of Points 3 and 4. 1. THE BLACK SHEEP AND THE WHITE SHEEP, AGAIN. You say Bro Mubaashir: ―My reading of Dr. Wesley's words is that Prophet Muhammad and the other original black Arabs conceptualized Allah in one way (the way of what he refers to as the Semitic tradition) and then afterwards the non-blacks, non-Arabs became Muslim and brought their non-Semitic conceptualization of Allah into the Islamic religion, which drowned out by their sheer numbers the black Semitic way of looking at Allah. Eventually, the white way of seeing (understanding) Allah became the dominant concept and the black way was pushed into the background and obscured.‖ This is a pretty accurate summation of my position. You then appropriately quote the hadith, which I too will do for the benefit of readers and this discussion: "Zayd b. Aslam related that the Prophet (s) saw a vision and told his companions about it. He said: "I saw a group of black sheep and a group of white sheep then mixed with them [until the white sheep became so numerous that the black sheep could no longer be seen in the herd of sheep.] I interpreted it to mean that [the black sheep are the Arabs. They will accept Islam and become many. As for the white sheep, they are the non-Arabs (i.e. Persians, Turks, Byzantines, ect.)] They will enter Islam and then share with you your wealth and your genealogy [and become so numerous that the Arabs will not be noticed amongst them.]" The Companions became surprised by what he (s) said. Then one said, "The non-Arab Persians will enter our land, O' Messenger of Allah?!" The Prophet (s) then said, "Yes. By He Who Has my soul in His Hand, if the religion was hanging on the distant star, men from the non-Arab Persians would reach it and the luckiest of them would be the people of Faris." Bro Mubaashir then offers the following: ―Upon reading this hadith, I see no reason to interpret the black/white reference as a racial reference, nor does it hint that this influx of non-Arabs to Al-Islam would crowd out ‗true‘ Islam or the ‗true‘ concept of Allah held by the Arabs. To me, according to this report, Prophet Muhammad simply uses the black/white sheep reference as a metaphor for a time when non- Arabs of other ethnicities will enter Islam in crowds and outnumber the Arabs. This is not a bad thing, this is a good thing. Sura 110 tells us that when we see the people coming to the Deen in crowds glorify and celebrate the praises of our Rabb. The hadith says that they will ‗accept Islam and become many.‘ If we accept this hadith, it indicates that Prophet Muhammad envisioned many people from all over the world becoming Muslims, but it doesn't prove Dr. Wesley's contention that the prophet predicted a white takeover and corruption of Al-Islam.‖ 59
