"He ran the race." "He ran up the bills." "He ran the cable wire up to the second floor." You can't just
pick any one of these meanings and fit it into a sentence and say that is what it means. You have to select
the correct meaning of the word for the sentence that is being used.
While it is fair to argue or debate the meaning of a word, it is intelligent to choose the word that makes
the most sense and is most likely the correct meaning of the word for the sentence you are talking about.
So, the task before us is to consider which of these definitions most likely applies to Allah, The Creator of
the skies, the earth, and every single thing within; including you and I and Dr. Wesley.
To save us all time, let us simply consider Dr. Wesley's choice of definition for As-Samad and the
definition used by the majority of Muslims in the world.
Dr. Wesley argues that because one of the meanings of Samad is a solid, not hollow, this proves that Allah
is a solid, physical thing; a delimited being, a finite, solid material being, yes a human being. By choosing
this meaning of the word Samad, he declares that the Muslim scholars have mistranslated this word as
eternal in order to support their own definition of a non-physical, non-material G-d.
Most other Muslims accept the definition of As-Samad that means the One upon whom everything else
depends for its existence. They get this meaning from the definition of Samad that means to tend or repair
or attain to something.
You see, all things are tended to (taken care of) by Allah. You could not tend to anything without using
the gift of your body and mind Allah gave you. You couldn't tend to your garden without the water and
sunlight. Everything that needs tending to or that wants to tend or take care of something is dependent
upon Allah.
All things in need of repair depend upon what Allah has put here to help them repair. Whatever needs to
be fixed depends upon the things Allah made and makes available to us for making the repair. We can't
repair wooden things without the trees Allah gave us. We can't repair the streets without the body,
knowledge, and skills we got from Allah. The sidewalk couldn't be repaired without Allah's creating the
materials from which concrete is made. Everything is dependent upon Allah.
Anything that seeks to attain or acquire something depends upon what Allah has put here for them to use
to try and attain it. In order to become a doctor or lawyer, you need air to breathe, you need eyes to read
and ears to hear. Whatever seeks to attain or acquire, it needs Allah. Whatever exists needs Allah in order
to exist, but Allah doesn't need anything to exist, He is independent of everything.
The reason that some translators use the word Eternal and Absolute for the word or attribute As-Samad is
because if everything depends upon Allah for its existence, then Allah had to have been here before
everything. If space owes its existence to Allah, and it does, then Allah's existence had to precede the
existence of space.
You see, all things get there existence from Allah, including all solid things; all material things, all males
and females, all human beings. Allah is not a limited solid, all solids get their existence from Allah,
therefore Allah had exist before solids or materials could come into existence.
Now, consider the two explanations of this word, Dr. Wesley's and the one I've given, and choose which
one you think is more correct in describing the G-d who created the Sun and the Moon and your brain.
