Development of an Augmented Reality system using ARToolKit and user invisible markers Figure 4.39 HiRes-800PC HMD The company has a number of solutions they can provide, with increasing degree of completeness. First of all they can just include two cameras into the HMD for having it stereoscopic enabled. Then the camera for detecting the invisible medium has to be added by ourselves. But also they have the possibility to incorporate this camera. If an even more complete solution is desired next to these two solutions, that possibility exists. They can deliver a stereoscopic HMD with the camera for detecting the invisible medium included, together with a computer equipped with two video cards. This would be a complete all-in-one system that can be used for AR applications with invisible marker tracking. 4.5.2 Optical see-through The before described HMDs are video see-through HMDs. Now will be described another type known as optical see-through. This type of HMDs does not use cameras for acquiring the images, but are transparent to allow the user to see the real world through it. Then virtual objects are rendered over these images. This type of HMD could also be used for creating augmented views. The LitEye-500 is an optical see-through HMD that has an option to open and close the display of the HMD. Both are shown in Figures 4.40 and 4.41. The resolution of the HMD enables 800x600 with a FOV of 28 degrees. Video inputs of the HMD are PAL, NTSC and RS-170. The LitEye-500 is available at http://liteye.com, for a price of €2950, excl. VAT. For creating stereoscopic AR a pair needs to be obtained, since the LitEye-500 only covers one eye. This DataVisor HiRes HMD has full colour capability. The FOV delivered by the HMD is 60 degrees. RGB inputs are accepted ranging from 640x480 to 1280x1024. The HMD and the seethrough option are not delivered as a complete solution, but need to be purchased apart from each other. The HMD carries a price of €17725 at http://www.inition.co.uk. For the optical see-through option an additional amount of €2720 is to be paid. The HMD with see-through option is shown in Figure 4.42. 4.6 Summary of results A suitable medium is always needed.
