lymph: fluid that has diffused into the lymphatic
capillaries. (p. 377)
magma: hot, melted rock material beneath Earth’s
surface. (p. 33)
matter: anything that takes up space and has mass.
(p. 652)
meiosis (mi OH sus): reproductive process that produces
four haploid sex cells from one diploid cell and
ensures offspring will have the same number of
chromosomes as the parent organisms. (p. 285)
melanin: pigment produced by the epidermis, that protects
skin and gives skin and eyes their color.
(p. 435)
melting: change of matter from a solid state to a liquid
state. (p. 659)
menstrual cycle: hormone-controlled monthly cycle of
changes in the female reproductive system that
includes the maturation of an egg and preparation
of the uterus for possible pregnancy. (p. 476)
menstruation (men STRAY shun): monthly flow of blood
and tissue cells that occurs when the lining of the
uterus breaks down and is shed. (p. 476)
metabolism: the total of all chemical reactions in an
organism. (p. 261)
metamorphic rock: forms when heat, pressure, or fluids
act on igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic
rock to change its form or composition, or both.
(p. 67)
meteorologist (meet ee uh RAHL uh just): studies weather
and uses information from Doppler radar, weather
satellites, computers and other instruments to make
weather maps and provide forecasts. (p. 134)
mineral: inorganic nutrient that regulates many chemical
reactions in the body. (p. 38); naturally occurring
inorganic solid that has a definite chemical composition
and an orderly internal atomic structure.
(p. 400)
mitochondrion: cell organelle where food is broken
down, which releases energy. (p. 226)
mitosis (mi TOH sus): cell process in which the nucleus
divides to form two nuclei identical to each other,
and identical to the original nucleus, in a series of
steps (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and
telophase). (p. 278)
encuentra por debajo de la superficie terrestre. (p. 33)
materia: cualquier cosa que ocupe espacio y tenga
masa. (p. 652)
(p. 659)
