semen/sperm semen/espermatozoides
semen (SEE mun): mixture of sperm and a fluid that
helps sperm move and supplies them with an energy
source. (p. 474)
sex-linked gene: an allele inherited on a sex chromosome
and that can cause human genetic disorders
such as color blindness and hemophilia. (p. 319)
sexual reproduction: a type of reproduction in which
two sex cells, usually an egg and a sperm, join to
form a zygote, which will develop into a new organism
with a unique identity. (p. 284)
silicate: describes a mineral that contains silicon and
oxygen and usually one or more other elements.
(p. 34)
solar eclipse: occurs during a new moon, when the Sun,
the Moon, and Earth are lined up in a specific way
and Earth moves into the Moon’s shadow. (p. 189)
solar system: system that includes the Sun, planets,
comets, meteoroids and other objects that orbit the
Sun. (p. 194)
solid: matter with a definite shape and volume; has
tightly packed particles that move mainly by
vibrating. (p. 653)
solstice: time when the Sun reaches its greatest distance
north or south of the equator. (p. 182)
solubility (sahl yuh BIH luh tee): measure of how much
solute can be dissolved in a certain amount of
solvent. (p. 629)
solute: substance that dissolves and seems to disappear
into another substance. (p. 622)
solution: homogeneous mixture whose elements and/or
compounds are evenly mixed at the molecular level
but are not bonded together. (p. 622)
solvent: substance that dissolves the solute. (p. 622)
species: group of organisms that share similar characteristics
and can reproduce among themselves producing
fertile offspring. (p. 334)
specific gravity: ratio of a mineral’s weight compared
with the weight of an equal volume of water. (p. 38)
speed: equals the distance traveled divided by the time
needed to travel that distance. (p. 685)
sperm: haploid sex cell formed in the male reproductive
organs. (p. 284); in humans, male reproductive
cells produced in the testes. (p. 474)
agua. (p. 38)
