RNA/sediments ARN/sedimentos
RNA: ribonucleic acid, a type of nucleic acid that carries
codes for making proteins from the nucleus to the
ribosomes. (p. 292)
rock: mixture of one or more minerals, rock fragments,
volcanic glass, organic matter, or other natural
materials; can be igneous, metamorphic, or
sedimentary. (p. 57)
rock cycle: model that describes how rocks slowly
change from one form to another through time.
(p. 59)
rotation: spinning of Earth on its axis, which causes day
and night; it takes 24 hours for Earth to complete
one rotation. (p. 180)
saturated: describes a solution that holds the total
amount of solute that it can hold under given
conditions. (p. 630)
science: process of trying to understand the world.
(p. 7)
scientific methods: step-by-step procedures of scientific
problem solving, which can include identifying the
problem, forming and testing a hypothesis, analyzing
the test results, and drawing conclusions. (p. 12)
sea breeze: movement of air from sea to land during
the day when cooler air from above the water moves
over the land, forcing the heated, less dense air
above the land to rise. (p. 107)
season: short period of climate change in an area
caused by the tilt of Earth’s axis as Earth revolves
around the Sun. (p. 156)
second law of motion: states that an object acted on by
an unbalanced force will accelerate in the direction
of the force with an acceleration equal to the force
divided by the object’s mass. (p. 694)
sedimentary rock: a type of rock, such as limestone, that
is most likely to contain fossils and is formed when
layers of sand, silt, clay, or mud are cemented and
compacted together or when minerals are deposited
from a solution. (p. 68)
sediments: loose materials, such as rock fragments,
mineral grains, and the remains of once-living
plants and animals, that have been moved by wind,
water,ice,or gravity.(p.71)
S
