trachea/vein tráquea/vena
trachea (TRAY kee uh): air-conducting tube that connects
the larynx with the bronchi; is lined with
mucous membranes and cilia, and contains strong
cartilage rings. (p. 414)
tropics: climate zone that receives the most solar radiation,
is located between latitudes 23°N and 23°S, and
is always hot, except at high elevations. (p. 148)
troposphere: layer of Earth’s atmosphere that is closest
to the ground, contains 99 percent of the water
vapor and 75 percent of the atmospheric gases, and
is where clouds and weather occur. (p. 92)
turbine: set of steam-powered fan blades that spins a
generator at a power plant. (p. 726)
ultraviolet radiation: a type of energy that comes to
Earth from the Sun, can damage skin and cause cancer,
and is mostly absorbed by the ozone layer.
(p. 96)
unbalanced forces: unequal forces that do not cancel
when acting on an object and cause a change in the
object’s motion. (p. 692)
ureter: tube that carries urine from each kidney to the
bladder. (p. 421)
uterus: in female humans, hollow, muscular, pearshaped
organ where a fertilized egg develops into a
baby. (p. 475)
vagina (vuh JI nuh): muscular tube that connects the
lower end of the uterus to the outside of the body;
the birth canal through which a baby travels when
being born. (p. 475)
vaporization: the process by which matter changes from
a liquid state to a gas. (pp. 604, 659)
variation: inherited trait that makes an individual different
from other members of the same species and
results from a mutation in the organism’s genes.
(p. 338)
vascular plant: plant with tubelike structures that move
minerals, water, and other substances throughout
the plant. (p. 505)
vein: blood vessel that carries blood to the heart.
(p. 374)
U
V
cálidas excepto a grandes alturas. (p. 148)
(p. 338)
planta vascular: planta con estructuras semejantes a
tubos, las cuales sirven para movilizar minerales,
agua y otras sustancias a toda la planta. (p. 505)
