under <strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> Gen. Schuyler, engaged <strong>in</strong> scout<strong>in</strong>g, which <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

him <strong>in</strong> skirmishes with <strong>the</strong> advanc<strong>in</strong>g parties from Gen. Burgoyne's army,<br />

until his surrender <strong>in</strong> Oct., 1777, at Saratoga, N. Y.<br />

In Sept., 1778, he marched <strong>in</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong> Jonathan <strong>Olmsted</strong>'s co. to Fishkill,<br />

serv<strong>in</strong>g for two months. There be<strong>in</strong>g an alarm <strong>in</strong> April, 1779, he turned out<br />

for six months under Capta<strong>in</strong> Warner <strong>in</strong> Colonel Waterman's regt., to repel<br />

<strong>the</strong> supposed <strong>in</strong>cursions <strong>of</strong> British and Indians <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> Ft. George.<br />

Gen. Champion served <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cont<strong>in</strong>ental Army <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> War <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Revolution<br />

at Lex<strong>in</strong>gton, April 26, 1775. Was 2d Lieut., 8th Co., 2d Regt. ; promoted<br />

1st. Lieut., <strong>in</strong> May. Served under Gen. Joseph Spencer, at Roxbury, until<br />

his term expired, Dec. 10, 1775. Lt. Champion, with a squad <strong>of</strong> his men,<br />

fought at Bunker Hill. He was promoted Jan. 1st, Adj. on <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>of</strong><br />

Gen. Wyllys <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 22d Cont<strong>in</strong>ental Regt., and moved to New York, by way<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shore towns. Aug. 27th he took part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Long Island. The<br />

regt. retreated to White Pla<strong>in</strong>s, and when its time expired, he was promoted,<br />

Jan. 1, 1777, capt. <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1st Conn. L<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

July 15, 1779, Capt. Champion was act<strong>in</strong>g major <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1st battalion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Light Brigade, which was organized by Gen. Wash<strong>in</strong>gton to capture<br />

Stony Po<strong>in</strong>t on <strong>the</strong> Hudson. It was composed <strong>of</strong> picked men from all <strong>the</strong><br />

regts. under Wash<strong>in</strong>gton's immediate command, and was organized <strong>in</strong>to 4<br />

Tegts. <strong>of</strong> 2 battalions each. Connecticut furnished one regt. <strong>of</strong> 400 men,<br />

which <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> assault formed part <strong>of</strong> Wyllys' right column. Gen. Wayne
