carried <strong>the</strong> works at midnight, July 15, 1779. Major Champion rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />

service until <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war. He was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Conn. "Society<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati."<br />

He obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Charter for <strong>the</strong> Phoenix Bank <strong>of</strong> Hartford, Conn., because<br />

<strong>the</strong> State Bank refused him a loan <strong>of</strong> $2,000. He was <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Conn.<br />

Land Co., to which he subscribed over $5,000, and <strong>the</strong> towns <strong>of</strong> Champion,<br />

N. Y., and Ohio were named <strong>in</strong> his honor.<br />

He came to East Haddam, Conn., <strong>in</strong> 1767, after <strong>the</strong> French and Indian<br />

War, <strong>in</strong> which he participated. Received a deed <strong>of</strong> land from K<strong>in</strong>g George <strong>of</strong><br />

England, <strong>in</strong> Columbia Co., N. Y. He was a soldier <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> War <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Revolution.<br />

Conn. Ichabod <strong>Olmsted</strong> came from E. Haddam, Conn., and bought 200<br />

acres <strong>of</strong> land, <strong>of</strong> a Mr. Proctor. He paid for it $3.00 per acre. He brought<br />

his provisions, a gun and axe, and cleared up <strong>the</strong> farm, now occupied by his<br />

son Ichabod, at Sunside, Green Co., N. Y.<br />
