York and Colon, S. <strong>America</strong>. The ships <strong>of</strong> this Hne formed a sort <strong>of</strong> auxiliary<br />

force to <strong>the</strong> United States Navy and were commanded by naval <strong>of</strong>lScers.<br />

Dr. <strong>Olmsted</strong> served under <strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong> Porter, afterwards so<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>guished as an admiral <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civil War.<br />

On leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> service <strong>the</strong> doctor returned home and settled <strong>in</strong> East<br />

Hartford as a practic<strong>in</strong>g physician. Here he married Anna, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Colonel Solomon <strong>Olmsted</strong>, his fifth cous<strong>in</strong>.<br />

(It is perhaps not unfitt<strong>in</strong>g to note here a curious little co<strong>in</strong>cidence. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> celebration on <strong>the</strong> occasion <strong>of</strong> Lafayette's visit to Hartford dur<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

return journey through <strong>the</strong> States, <strong>the</strong> Governor's Foot Guard was commanded<br />

by Major Lynde <strong>Olmsted</strong>, <strong>the</strong> doctor's fa<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> First Regiment<br />

was commanded by Colonel Solomon <strong>Olmsted</strong>, his fa<strong>the</strong>r-<strong>in</strong>-law to be.)<br />

After practic<strong>in</strong>g his pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>in</strong> East Hartford for ten (10) years, illness<br />

<strong>in</strong> his <strong>family</strong>, which necessitated a change <strong>of</strong> climate, caused him to give up<br />

his practice, and an <strong>in</strong>cipient heart affection led him later under <strong>the</strong> advice<br />

<strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most em<strong>in</strong>ent New York physicians to abandon his pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />

altoge<strong>the</strong>r. After several years spent <strong>in</strong> favorable climates <strong>the</strong> health <strong>of</strong> his<br />

<strong>family</strong> was restored and he came back and took up his residence <strong>in</strong> Hartford,<br />

where he lived until his home was broken up by <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> his wife and <strong>the</strong><br />

marriage <strong>of</strong> his daughters. His later years he devoted to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Olmsted</strong> <strong>Genealogy</strong><br />

which proved to be to him <strong>in</strong>deed a labor <strong>of</strong> love and <strong>in</strong> which he took<br />

last<strong>in</strong>g satisfaction—a satisfaction marred only by <strong>the</strong> fact that he did not five<br />

to see it published. He died at <strong>the</strong> residence <strong>of</strong> his son-<strong>in</strong>-law, Rev. William<br />

E. Strong, <strong>in</strong> Jackson, Michigan.<br />
