Lucius F. <strong>Olmsted</strong> was born at Benson, Vermont, March 10th, 1796.<br />

His mo<strong>the</strong>r died when he was but two years <strong>of</strong> age, and at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> eight he<br />

removed to Shelborn, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same State, where dur<strong>in</strong>g his stay he worked<br />

summers and went to school w<strong>in</strong>ters, thus not only support<strong>in</strong>g himself but<br />

secur<strong>in</strong>g an education which fitted him for <strong>the</strong> occupation <strong>of</strong> school teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 1814 he removed to Cayuga Bridge, N. Y., and resded <strong>the</strong>re<br />

until April, 1835. March 9, 1822, he was married to Emel<strong>in</strong>e Willard <strong>of</strong> that<br />

place, and <strong>the</strong>y lived happily toge<strong>the</strong>r for nearly fifty years, she surviv<strong>in</strong>g him<br />

and mourn<strong>in</strong>g his departure. Mr. <strong>Olmsted</strong> was converted under <strong>the</strong> preach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> Rev. Medad Pomeroy, and was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian Church<br />

from <strong>the</strong> year 1830, and has s<strong>in</strong>ce that time been a subscriber to The Evan-<br />

gelist. In April, 1835, he removed to Lakeville, Liv<strong>in</strong>gston County, resid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>re until <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 1858, when he made his home at Geneseo. S<strong>in</strong>ce I<br />

have known him he has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2d Presbyterian Church <strong>of</strong> this<br />

place and one <strong>of</strong> its chief pecuniary supporters. He always gave liberally for<br />

<strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel at home and abroad and when called upon for his<br />

own Church support, always said, " Put me down for one-tenth <strong>of</strong> what you<br />
