(9178) JOHN OLMSTED, Haverhill, Mass. b. at Hartland, Vt., Sept. 30,<br />

1785; d. at Fort Mart<strong>in</strong>, on <strong>the</strong> Missouri river, Aug. 30, 1819; m. at Salem,<br />

N. H., Feb. 9, 1806, Sarah Ayer; b. Feb. 11, 1780; d. at Needham, Mass.,<br />

Apr. 23, 1865; dau. <strong>of</strong> Perley and Lois (Stevens) Ayer. He was a Carpenter<br />

and built <strong>the</strong> house near <strong>the</strong> cemetery, long occupied by Rev. Grant Powers.<br />

Removed <strong>the</strong>nce to Methuen, Mass. In October, 1818, he enlisted at Boston,<br />

<strong>in</strong> Co. E., 6th U. S. Infantry, under Capt. W. S. Foster. After a brief service<br />

at Plattsburg <strong>the</strong> company was sent to St. Louis, <strong>the</strong>nce to <strong>the</strong> Missouri river<br />

where he died, after ten months <strong>of</strong> army life.<br />

David <strong>Olmsted</strong> was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Plattsburg, N. Y., imtil his son William<br />

was eight years <strong>of</strong> age. After <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> his first wife he moved to Enfield,<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>e, and later married <strong>the</strong>re. He was a soldier <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> War <strong>of</strong> 1812, and<br />

was honorably discharged. He obta<strong>in</strong>ed a land warrant, and left it <strong>in</strong> care <strong>of</strong><br />

a blacksmith <strong>in</strong> his town, and lost it, as it was not put on record, as agreed.
