16 years, he went to Albany, N. Y., as a clerk <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> store <strong>of</strong> "B. B. Hyde &<br />

Co." and two years afterwards was sent to Onondaga County to serve <strong>in</strong> a<br />

branch store. After his marriage he bought a farm <strong>in</strong> Arcadia near his bro<strong>the</strong>rs,<br />

but <strong>in</strong> two years sold out and returned to Whitestown to take charge <strong>of</strong> his<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r's farm.<br />

(761) PHILO HOPKINS OLMSTED, b. at Simsbury, Conn., Feb. 26<br />

1793; d. Feb. 20, 1870; m. July, 1817, Sarah Phillips; d. Nov. 24, 1873; dau<br />

<strong>of</strong> James and Rachel (McGhee) Phillips, <strong>of</strong> Mercersburg, Pa. He removed to<br />

Columbus, Ohio, <strong>in</strong> 1808. Was proprietor and editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Columbus Gazette,<br />

State Pr<strong>in</strong>ter, and Mayor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. Was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first Sunday school<br />

teachers <strong>in</strong> Ohio, hold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> school <strong>in</strong> a barn. He served <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> City Council,<br />

and on various Boards, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Assembly. In <strong>the</strong> resolutions<br />

adopted upon his death, it was said: " He was one who ever discharged his<br />

duties to <strong>the</strong> public, and to <strong>in</strong>dividuals with whom he had bus<strong>in</strong>ess relations,<br />

with fidelity and probity. We are thankful for <strong>the</strong> pleasant memories associated<br />

with his name."
