" Dear Parents:<br />

" I have only time to <strong>in</strong>form you that we are about embark<strong>in</strong>g for Canada.<br />

Our army from Fort George is on <strong>the</strong> way up <strong>the</strong> lake to jo<strong>in</strong> us. They<br />

have abandoned Fort George, after destroy<strong>in</strong>g it, and <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Newark.<br />

I am happy to <strong>in</strong>form you that I am promoted from a 3d to a 2d lieut., from<br />

last May, and by vacancies happen<strong>in</strong>g above me I am now a 1st lieut., and<br />

have command <strong>of</strong> a company <strong>of</strong> 60 men. The conflict will be a bloody one,<br />

and if I survive it, will write particulars (I hope from Montreal); if not, remember<br />

me as I deserve. I hope to susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> honor <strong>of</strong> our <strong>family</strong> and name.<br />

I am <strong>in</strong> high spirits and sure <strong>of</strong> conquer<strong>in</strong>g. My love to all our <strong>family</strong> and<br />

friends.<br />
