Potential Pollutant Linkages
7.33 The potential pollutant linkages are assessed below:
Contamination
Source
Contaminants
associated with
made ground on
site –
Hydrocarbons
Ground gases –
deep made
ground or off
site refuse tip
Contaminants
from off-site
sources e.g.
garage
Linkage Complete
Yes, can be removed by the use
of appropriate PPE and limited
exposure.
Site end users Yes, there is a possible risk to site
end users but this will be
mitigated by the presence of
buildings or hardstanding over
much of the site.
Aquifer and
Espedair Burn
Adjacent
properties
Possible but unlikely. No known
groundwater abstractions present.
River. No groundwater recorded
within the reservoir area in the
trial pits, indicating flow is
negligible.
No. Predominantly commercial
properties in the direction of
groundwater flow. Surrounding
area is covered by glacial till.
Site end users Yes, mitigated by monitoring or
incorporation of gas membrane
Site end users No contamination identified likely
to arise from off-site sources
7.34 In summary, based on an assessment of the chemical results, the site presents a low
risk to site end users in view of the commercial nature of the development; all the site area
will be covered by hardstanding or buildings. Some TPH and PAH has been recorded in
groundwater within the backfilled reservoir, which could pose a potential migration risk.
