Foundations Traditional strip or pad foundations should be taken onto the underlying firm and firm to<br />

stiff natural clays at a minimum depth of 900mm. An allowable bearing capacity of<br />

125kN/m 2 is appropriate.<br />

It is recommended that current guidance with respect soil shrinkage/heave associated<br />

with trees/hedgerows is followed; this should be based on a medium volume change<br />

potential for the natural clays.<br />

Ground bearing floor slabs are considered appropriate with the made ground sorted and<br />

re-engineered prior to floor construction.<br />

Subsurface concrete should be designed in accordance with BRE Special Digest 1:2005<br />

Design Sulphate Class DS-1 and ACEC classification AC-1.<br />

A preliminary CBR value of 5% is considered appropriate for made ground granular soils<br />

and weathered sandstone subgrades with 2% for natural clays, subject to proof rolling.<br />

On site CBR testing is recommended prior to pavement construction.<br />

Soakaway drainage of surface water is not considered appropriate.<br />
