Water Supply Pipes and Utilities
8.7 Chemical results with respect to UKWIR guidance should be forwarded to the local
water authority to provide recommendations on the appropriate water supply pipes to be used
on site. The results indicate that barrier pipe or wrapped steel are likely to be appropriate.
Drainage trenches in the area of the former reservoir should be sealed.
Foundations and Floor Slabs
8.8 Beneath the area of the proposed store footprint, the investigation proved
predominantly granular made ground to a maximum thickness of 400mm underlain by firm
becoming firm to stiff sandy gravelly clay with weathered sandstone bedrock recovered as
very dense gravel present at between v1.45 and 1.8m. Competent sandstone was proved at
depths of between 1.7 and 1.9m.
8.9 Given the limited thickness of made ground, it is recommended that foundation loads
are taken onto the underlying firm and firm to stiff clays with a minimum foundation depth of
900mm below ground level. An allowable bearing capacity of 125kN/m 2 is appropriate and
will limit total settlement to less than 25mm.
8.10 It is recommended that current guidance with respect soil shrinkage/heave associated
with trees/hedgerows is followed; this should be based on a medium volume change potential
for the natural clays.
8.11 Ground bearing floor slabs are considered appropriate with the made ground sorted
and re-engineered prior to floor construction.
External Works
8.12 No CBR testing has been undertaken and none was undertaken as part of the previous
intrusive investigation. As a preliminary recommendation, a CBR value of 5% is considered
appropriate for granular made ground and weathered sandstone bedrock with a CBR value of
2% for the natural clays, subject to proof rolling of any soft spots. In situ testing is
recommended once subgrades have been constructed.
