Each classroom computer should be equipped with the<br />

• Database s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

• Spreadsheet s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

• Graphics s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

• Communications s<strong>of</strong>tware, e.g., email, Internet, etc.<br />

• Presentation s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

• Virus detection s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

• Other s<strong>of</strong>tware as needed, e.g., s<strong>of</strong>tware for the<br />

creation <strong>of</strong> web pages, etc.<br />

SOFTWARE - SOCIAL STUDIES<br />

Each classroom should be equipped with social studies<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware appropriate for the level <strong>of</strong> instruction and the<br />

curriculum as noted in the TEKS for <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Studies</strong>.<br />

Examples are as follows:<br />

• Electronic encyclopedia<br />

• Electronic atlas<br />

• CD-ROMs<br />

Appendix C: The Well-Equipped <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> Classroom<br />

TECHNOLOGY TOOLS<br />

Each classroom should be equipped with the following<br />

technology tools:<br />

• Video cassette recorder/player (VCR)<br />

• Audio cassette recorder/player<br />

• Compact disc player<br />

• Large-screen, wall mounted television/monitor<br />

• Radio<br />

• Television<br />

• Overhead projector<br />

AUDIO VISUAL RESOURCES<br />

Each classroom should be equipped with the following:<br />

• Audio tapes<br />

• Video tapes<br />

• CD-ROMs<br />

• Pictures and artifacts<br />

• Posters, time lines, U.S. and state flags<br />

• Bulletin boards<br />

• Transparencies<br />

Anyone responsible for ordering CD-ROMs should refer<br />

to the <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> TEKS CD-ROM List produced by<br />

SSCED. It provides an annotated list <strong>of</strong> CD-ROMs to<br />

support the TEKS for <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> and references other<br />

catalogues (see Appendix D or ).<br />

CLASSROOM REFERENCE LIBRARY*<br />

Each classroom should have a classroom reference<br />

library. Suggested items for the library are as follows:<br />

• Newspapers and magazines<br />

• Almanacs, i.e., world, U.S., and state<br />

• Dictionaries<br />

• Atlases<br />

• Grammar reference books<br />

• Encyclopedias (may be electronic or paper)<br />

• Historical reference books<br />

• Fiction and nonfiction references related to the<br />

curriculum<br />

* The well-equipped social studies classroom needs<br />

these sources in the room, in addition to having them<br />

available in the school library. Electronic versions <strong>of</strong><br />

many <strong>of</strong> these resources are now available.
