An Overview <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Texas</strong><br />

Essential Knowledge and Skills<br />

(TEKS) for <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Studies</strong><br />

REQUIRED CURRICULUM<br />

Understanding the <strong>Texas</strong> Essential Knowledge and Skills<br />

(TEKS) begins with knowing the components <strong>of</strong> the<br />

required curriculum for <strong>Texas</strong> public schools as outlined<br />

in the <strong>Texas</strong> Education Code §28.002:<br />

(a) Each school district that <strong>of</strong>fers kindergarten<br />

through grade 12 shall <strong>of</strong>fer, as a required<br />

curriculum:<br />

(1) a foundation curriculum that includes:<br />

(A) English language arts;<br />

(B) mathematics;<br />

(C) science; and<br />

(D) social studies, consisting <strong>of</strong> <strong>Texas</strong>,<br />

United States, and world history,<br />

government, and geography; and<br />

(2) an enrichment curriculum that includes:<br />

(A) to the extent possible, languages other<br />

than English;<br />

(B) health;<br />

(C) physical education;<br />

(D) fine arts;<br />

(E) economics, with emphasis on the free<br />

enterprise system and its benefits;<br />

(F) career and technology education; and<br />

(G) technology applications.<br />

The same subchapter <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Texas</strong> Education Code also<br />

directed the State Board <strong>of</strong> Education to identify the<br />

essential knowledge and skills that all students should be<br />

able to demonstrate and specified how districts shall use<br />

the essential knowledge and skills:<br />

(c) The State Board <strong>of</strong> Education, with the direct<br />

participation <strong>of</strong> educators, parents, business and<br />

industry representatives, and employers shall by<br />

rule identify the essential knowledge and skills<br />

<strong>of</strong> each subject <strong>of</strong> the foundation curriculum that<br />

all students should be able to demonstrate and<br />

that will be used in evaluating textbooks under<br />

Chapter 31 and addressed on the assessment<br />

instruments required under Subchapter B,<br />

Chapter 39. As a condition <strong>of</strong> accreditation, the<br />

board shall require each district to provide<br />

instruction in the essential knowledge and skills<br />

at appropriate grade levels.<br />

(d) The State Board <strong>of</strong> Education, after consulting<br />

with educators, parents, business and industry<br />

representatives, and employers, shall by rule<br />

identify the essential knowledge and skills <strong>of</strong><br />

each subject <strong>of</strong> the enrichment curriculum that<br />

all students should be able to demonstrate. Each<br />

district shall use the essential knowledge and<br />

skills identified by the board as guidelines in<br />

providing instruction in the enrichment curriculum.<br />

The <strong>Texas</strong> Administrative Code contains the following<br />

State Board <strong>of</strong> Education rules that also clarify what is<br />

required <strong>of</strong> school districts regarding the essential<br />

knowledge and skills:<br />

§74.1(b) specifies that a “school district may add<br />

elements at its discretion but must not delete or omit<br />

instruction in the foundation curriculum.”
