Curricular Priorities<br />

Facilitator’s Guide<br />

Re-create the accompanying graphic organizer (Figure 37) and use it to prioritize the knowledge and skills listed<br />

in each grade level and course <strong>of</strong> the TEKS for <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Studies</strong>.<br />

Materials:<br />

• The TEKS for <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Studies</strong><br />

• Chart Paper<br />

• Markers<br />

• Post-it Tape Flags<br />

Directions for Facilitators<br />

1. Divide the participants into grade level groups with no more than three people working together.<br />

2. Direct the group in using the “Directions for Participants.”<br />

3. After the groups report their findings, guide the participants to draw conclusions about their findings<br />

collectively.<br />

4. As a whole group, discuss the question: “What implications do these findings have for your teaching?”<br />

Directions for Participants<br />

Chapter 7: Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development in <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Studies</strong><br />

1. In pairs or threes, participants analyze the grade level/course they teach.<br />

2. Each group draws the circles in Figure 37 on chart paper and labels them.<br />

3. Write the TEKS sites [example: 8.2 (A)] on Post-it Tape Flags.<br />

4. Discuss each TEKS site, decide where it belongs on the range <strong>of</strong> circles, and attach it there.<br />

5. Participants present their findings and support their judgments.
