museums, 56,8 percent in art museums, and 8,6 percent in natural his<strong>to</strong>rical museums.<br />

Museums in Finland are mainly funded by public grants. In 2009 the government funded the<br />
museums w<strong>it</strong>h 84,2 million euros, which is a l<strong>it</strong>tle b<strong>it</strong> <strong>more</strong> <strong>than</strong> 40 percent out of the <strong>to</strong>tal<br />
budgets of the museums (National Board of Antiqu<strong>it</strong>ies, 2009), the rest of the budget came<br />
from other sources, such as corporate sponsors (Ministry of Education and Culture, 2011).<br />
The museums ga<strong>there</strong>d an amount of 15 percent of their <strong>to</strong>tal budgets themselves, out of<br />
which 40 percent came from ticket revenues (National Board of Antiqu<strong>it</strong>ies, 2009). The<br />
percentage of the government grant in the <strong>to</strong>tal budgets of the museums has increased during<br />
the past years. In 2007 <strong>it</strong> amounted <strong>to</strong> 38 % of the budgets, in 2008 40,3 % and in 2009 42,9<br />
%. Foundations and associations funded museums in Finland w<strong>it</strong>h an amount of 5,2 percent,<br />
leaving 2,4 percent from other sources. The annual expend<strong>it</strong>ure of museums in 2009 was<br />
approximately 196,2 million euros. (National Board of Antiqu<strong>it</strong>ies, 2009).<br />

In Picture 7 the Finnish museum field is divided in<strong>to</strong> the different categories of museums. The<br />
museums of cultural his<strong>to</strong>ry conduct research, document and create exhib<strong>it</strong>ions, as well as<br />
promote and guide museum activ<strong>it</strong>ies in the c<strong>it</strong>ies or <strong>to</strong>wns they are located in. They also<br />
participate in the preservation of buildings and export of cultural <strong>it</strong>ems. The specialized<br />
