Against the Election of George Dempster Protest was taken by Baillie Balingall in he was at<br />

the preceeding Election chosen Deacon of the Baxter Trade and had accepted &c &c. Also<br />

was chosen Conveener of the Whole Trades. That he wasn’t Residenter in the Burgh & that it<br />

was inconsistant with the Character as Provost of St Andrews to be in the Town Council of<br />

<strong>Dundee</strong> - That he had been tampering and practising upon Several of the Members<br />

Mentioned in the Protest & therefore protested against the Said Geo Dempster for these<br />

Megull Practices And that he Should Not be put upon the Leet for Gild Counciller Requiring<br />

that the oaths Agst Bribery & corruption should be taken by every Member and that those<br />

members who had Refused to take the same should purge themselves by taking the Said<br />

Oath – taking Instruments Accordingly – The Recording of the protest was outvoted – of<br />

course not Entered.<br />

The Committee Appointed to inspect the ground wanted by James Hallyburton Reported that<br />

they had visited the same and thought that they Might givin him 10 feet to the South of his<br />

South Boundry – Upon him Allowing 8 feet of a Road in the ward – And appoints Baillie<br />

Ramsay to see it staked off.<br />

Bursary to the Gilds Mortification conferred on Alec Hill son of Alexr Hill Tennant in Drumkilbo<br />

– Hugh Sutherland Appointed to a Bursary in Lowsons Mortification to the College of St<br />

Andrews – (both presented upon Petitions without lying in the Tullie to Admet of other<br />

Applications).<br />

Intimation made as to James Gutherie of Craigie having Made Incroachments upon the Muir<br />

of Craigie upon which the Town had several great servitudes particularly Holding an Annual<br />

Fair called Stobs Fair of Grazing Cattle – of Exercising the Melited of Carting Fial and Divot<br />

and diging Clay All for the use of the inhabitants of the Burgh. – James Dick Treasurer<br />

Appointed to interrupt this Encroachment complained of - And instrumens taken 23 Nov 1761.<br />

This day the Convr of the Nine Trades compearing in full Council protested that the Town<br />

Council should make no private Bargain of the Town Property As to the Muir of Craigie<br />

without Consent of the Nine Trades And therupon took Instrument in the Clerks hands.<br />

The Council Appoints the Hospital Master to cause repair and sett up as much of the Hospital<br />

of this Burgh as will contain Ten people to be put therein And Appoints the possessor of the<br />

Hospital Yard to be Summond to Remove therefrom at Candlemass next.<br />

The Committee Appointed to Converse Craigie As to the Muir of Craigie reported that they<br />

had been with him And the council agree that before they do anything in this affair A memorial<br />

be drawn up to the Towns Rights to the Muir of Craigie to be laid before the Towns Agent to<br />

have Opinion what right the Town has – whether A Right of Property or servitude And<br />

whether or not they can warrantally Make any agreement or Settlement with Craigie. And to<br />

lay it before Council.<br />
