and concern<strong>in</strong>g appeals aga<strong>in</strong>st assessments, concern<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ations and concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

certificates.<br />

The pupils shall be actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the learn<strong>in</strong>g situation. The teach<strong>in</strong>g staff shall<br />

organise and carry out teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> accordance with subject curricula issued pursuant to<br />

the present <strong>Act</strong>. The head teacher shall organise the school <strong>in</strong> accordance with the first<br />

paragraph and regulations pursuant to the third paragraph and <strong>in</strong> accordance with section<br />

1-1 and regulations laid down pursuant to section 1-3.<br />

In response to an application from the municipality, the M<strong>in</strong>istry may permit a school to<br />

deviate from the first paragraph and from regulations concern<strong>in</strong>g subject curricula<br />

provided that this <strong>in</strong>volves no reduction <strong>in</strong> the total teach<strong>in</strong>g requirements. Be<strong>for</strong>e such<br />

permission can be granted, the school’s coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g committee must have submitted a<br />

consultation statement.<br />

Section 2-3a. Exemption from activities, etc. <strong>in</strong> the teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The school shall respect the religious and philosophical beliefs of pupils and parents and<br />

ensure their right to an equal education.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g written notification by parents, pupils shall be exempted from attend<strong>in</strong>g those<br />

parts of the teach<strong>in</strong>g at the <strong>in</strong>dividual school that they, on the basis of their own religion or<br />

own philosophy of life, perceive as be<strong>in</strong>g the practice of another religion or adherence to<br />

another philosophy of life, or that they on the same basis f<strong>in</strong>d objectionable or offensive. It<br />

is not necessary to give grounds <strong>for</strong> notification of exemption pursuant to the first<br />

sentence.<br />

Exemption cannot be demanded from <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> the academic content of the various<br />

topics of the curriculum. If the school does not accept a notification of exemption on such<br />

a basis, the school must deal with the matter <strong>in</strong> accordance with the provisions concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual decisions laid down <strong>in</strong> the Public Adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>Act</strong>.<br />

On notification of exemption, the school shall ensure that the exemption is implemented<br />

and make provisions <strong>for</strong> adapted teach<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> the scope of the curriculum.<br />

The school owner shall annually <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>m the pupils and the parents of pupils below the age<br />

of 15 of the rules <strong>for</strong> exemption.<br />

Pupils who have reached 15 years of age shall themselves provide written notification as<br />

referred to <strong>in</strong> the first paragraph. 1<br />
