FROM THE STUDENTS
At a slight angle to The Universe
By Ludvig Friberg
A few notes from two very innovative individuals on one of the most crucial
of creative impulses.
I find myself doing a lot of experimentation, I
can’t really help myself. I guess there are lots of
reasons why to experiment. Sometimes you just
get an image or a feeling stuck in your head and
you have to figure out some way to create it.
Or the other way around you get an
idea for a movement or a setup of elements
and you just have to see how
it looks and feels. I feel that it gives
a lot of creative energy back to experiment,
but it also has its negative
sides. There is a great risk of getting
stuck inside the excitement of exploration.
You just dig deeper and deeper,
not creating anything. Just experimenting
for the experiment’s sake.
Even at an early stage it is important
to have some sort of idea of what you
want to do with the experiment. To
define what feeling it gives you. For
example, by setting borders and then
trying to break them or
fill the space in between
fully. Sort of drawing a
really small box and colouring
it perfectly black
instead of drawing a
really big box and not
knowing where to start
filling it in. When setting
out to experiment
it is incredibly important
to clearly define
the area of experimentation.
At least if you
want to have something
usable coming out of it.
When it comes to actually
harvesting the fruits
of the experimentation
you need a pattern, a framework so to speak.
Especially when you have other people involved
in a process which is of an experimental nature,
everyone involved has to know the rules.
