KALTBLUT: You are interested in melancholy,
what does it mean to you?
JEROEN: The point you really have drawn in
the past and future. The moment you really realize
you are in between. It is really difficult to
explain. It is not something meant for words.
It’s a weird feeling. Something ‘unheimlich’.
Future and past make me happy, sometimes
so happy it makes me sad.
We have so much control. Mostly stupid
things or the ones that don’t matter to me. The
important ones (love and sadness) just flow,
they’re gone as quick as they appeared. You
don’t notice, like a shade in the night. The nice
part of the story is you only really remember
them when you are at the next station.
I can smell flowers much more intense afterwards
than the moment I see them. Not more
intense maybe, but longer..
KALTBLUT: Do you prefer to shoot people or
landscapes, why?
JEROEN: People in landscapes! Or landscapes
double-exposed on people. I don’t prefer one
way of taking pictures. I just do what I want
to do at the moment. If I don’t want to take
pictures at all I just enjoy the view, and let the
scenes grow bigger in my head and imagination.
I do prefer places where everything is possible.
Where there aren’t a lot of people. Places
you feel free. Theoretically where you can
have sex or do drugs for example. Free places,
darwin-places… but a good artist can work
everywhere, it’s just a way of putting on the
right goggles and play God?
Show or isolate what you want. And hopefully
other people can see it to.
