KALTBLUT:This issue is about Avantgarde.
What does the word Avant-garde
mean to you?
MARC:Avant-garde is about looking forward.
It’s about going way beyond the status quo, and
looking for new approaches, new ways of thinking.
It’s about questioning everything: language,
aesthetics, beliefs, politics, and meanings.
KALTBLUT:So if someone says to you that
you art is avant-garde.
What does it make you feel like?
MARC:I would be immensely flattered, but
I would be undeserving of the assessment.
I do try to look at things in new ways, but
I wouldn’t consider my work as Avantgarde.
KALTBLUT:How are you in real life?
Do you feel you are what people
expect you to be judging by your
drawings?
MARC:I am way less cool, less odd than people
think. The people who enjoy my art and
buy it and get it tattooed are much hipper (and
probably younger) than me. I am married, a father
of two, and live a pretty conventional life.
I like routines. It’s my head that wanders all over
the place, observing things and taking notes
and reflecting on the bizarre world we have collectively
created for ourselves.
KALTBLUT:Everyone I know is obsessed
with your antlers and the moustaches. Are
you obsessed with antlers and moustaches?
If so then how come? If not, what’s your
current “obsession”?
MARC:I wouldn’t say I’m obsessed. They’re just
such a wonderful visual device. When I juxtapose
them onto objects, there’s something amusing
that happens. There’s just the right amount of
absurdity. Good nonsense is all about using the
right details.
