KALTBLUT: What kind of materials do you use more in
your paintings and what in your sculptures?
Why do each work so well for you?
Adam: I use a lot of paste because I feel that paste is
feminine and it helps to balance out my masculinity. For
sculptures I mostly use Styrofoam and paper-mache,
sometimes plaster. I like to paint in acrylics. But my
guilty pleasure is drawing in crayon. It’s amongst my
favorite activities to draw in crayon. Sometimes I think
if I get a lot of money I’ll just get some crayons and tell
everybody to leave me alone.
KALTBLUT: Every artist from New York gets asked about how
inspiring this city is to him. We want to know if you as a person
are more inspired by the urban or natural landscape?
What inspires you?
Adam: I’m inspired a lot by the urban landscape of New
York. One of the artists who most inspired me growing
up was Red Grooms who straddled the world of folk art
and fine/high art. I was also inspired by the artwork
on psychedelic album covers, certainly the artwork on
Tower Recordings and No Neck Blues band album covers
was meaningful as well as the baroque images that
Pearls Before Swine used to use.
