The Forest Genetics Council of BC (FGC) created
SelectSeed Co. Ltd. on April 16, 1999 to expand provincial
seed orchard capacity to meet long-term Council objectives
for orchard seed use and genetically based plantation
gains. SelectSeed is a provincially registered company
that is wholly owned by the Forest Genetics Council of
BC (FGC) through its registered Society. All SelectSeed
orchard investments are through long-term contracts with
private-sector companies. SelectSeed also provides program
management services for the FGC, including organizing
meetings; participating in ongoing policy, structural, and
planning issues; preparing business plans and reports, and
dealing with legal and accounting matters.

During the fiscal year ending March 31, 2007, SelectSeed
orchard developments continued to focus on bringing
the orchard trees to the full production stage. SelectSeed
orchards carried out propagation to replace mortality by
grafting a total of 3,873 ramets. A total of 2,765 ramets were
planted across 14 seed orchards, which brought the total
number of ramets established to 34,160 (97% of the final
planned number) (Table 1). Scion was also collected to assist
other operators with orchard expansions.
The young orchards are just entering the production
phase, and 2006 produced a good crop of lodgepole pine
flowers that received supplemental mass pollination. These
will be harvested in the late summer of 2007. Small Douglasfir
and lodgepole pine crops were harvested, but 2006 was an
off year for cone production.
SelectSeed provided management services to the FGC,
including organizing and planning five meetings, developing
a business plan, producing species plans, completing the
FGC Annual Report for 2005/06, producing mid-term
reports, and dealing with legal and accounting matters
related to the BC Forest Genetics Society.
