CODE OF CONDUCT AND BOOKING PROCEDURES FOR FORMAL HALL<br />

1. Entry is by <strong>University</strong> Card only; no <strong>University</strong> Card no meal. Three guests are<br />

permitted per <strong>Fitzwilliam</strong> Member (Super Halls are limited to one guest). The host<br />

must wait in the Screens until their guest has arrived. The host should then present<br />

their <strong>University</strong> Card to the Hall and Buttery Supervisor or their Deputy.<br />

2. If a <strong>Fitzwilliam</strong> <strong>College</strong> Member wishes to make a booking for more than three guests<br />

they must contact the Steward’s Secretary to check on availability and to request a<br />

Formal Hall Application form (Super Halls are limited to one guest). Once completed<br />

this form should be returned to and sanctioned by the Steward’s Secretary. Please note<br />

that requests for Formal Halls must be made no later than 7 days prior to the date<br />

requested. Members <strong>of</strong> <strong>College</strong> are responsible for their guests at all times.<br />

3. Hall Staff will refuse entry to anyone who appears to be intoxicated.<br />

4. Diners must be in Hall by 19.25 and stand silently when the Master and Fellows enter<br />

and Grace is said. Those arriving after 19:30 may be refused entry. Diners must remain<br />

seated unless answering an urgent call <strong>of</strong> nature. They should remain seated, but are<br />

required to be silent for the concluding Grace.<br />

5. One bottle <strong>of</strong> wine per diner may be brought into the Hall. Beer glasses, bottles and<br />

other containers may not be brought in. No person attending Formal Hall will be served<br />

alcohol from the Bar at any time during the dinner.<br />

6. Smoking is not permitted.<br />

7. Speeches may only be made by prior arrangement with the senior Fellow present or<br />

with the Hall Supervisor.<br />

8. Throwing <strong>of</strong> food, eating without appropriate cutlery, coining or other incitement to<br />

excessive drinking, rudeness and any unmannerly behaviour to <strong>College</strong> Staff or other<br />

serious misconduct will result in immediate ejection from Formal Hall. In the case <strong>of</strong> a<br />

refusal to leave the Hall, Hall Staff may refer to a <strong>College</strong> Officer (Master, Dean,<br />

Bursar or Tutor) if one is present, or may summon a Porter to assist. The Porter may<br />

also inform the Pernoctating Tutor. In all cases the Hall Supervisor should report the<br />

incident to the Domestic Bursar.<br />

RULES APPLICABLE TO ALL CLUB AND SOCIETY DINNERS (IN ADDITION TO<br />

THE CODE OF CONDUCT FOR FORMAL HALL):<br />

1. Pre-dinner drinks may be held only during the half-hour before the dinner.<br />

2. No post-dinner drinks parties may be held in <strong>College</strong>.<br />

3. The entrance to the dining are will be supervised by Club Officers and Hall Staff who<br />

will refuse entry to anyone who appears to have already had too much to drink.<br />
