FLOODS AND SECULARISATION FLOODS AND SECULARISATION This summer brought us an unexpected experience of powers which showed us how small we still are compared to nature. Floods. Those of you who saw pictures of Prague in August know, at least a little bit, what I am talking about. Waves of destruction whose effects it will take a long time to repair. But other lessons came out of the experience, the good will of people both inside and outside the country, the sense of humour which, in our part of the world, has always been a necessary companion when confronting the burdens of history. Even before the waters had started to go down, there were jokes appearing on the internet and in the newspapers, such as: ìCottage for sale. Viewing at 10.30 in Prague, at 14.30 in MÏlnÌk and in the the evening in DÏËÌn. Swimming easily accessible.î Or a picture on the internet, called ìFloods in Pragueî, showing the cathedral surrounded by waters. A sense of the absurd has always worked better for us than pain killers. Now, giving shape to the issue of Communio Viatorum, with its articles on secularisation, and recovering of the sense of the holy place, this picture comes back to my mind. The holy place, the temple, above the waters, all else subjected to the evil powers. Wasnít it what the builders of the medieval cathedrals tried to express in their art? If you enter the holy place, its holiness protects you, you leave behind what is unclean and evil. Just look at the faces of demons built in stone, which are depicted as running away from the temple on its walls. There is the world inside and the world outside, sacred and secular, each governed by different forces. Or are they? Are the holy places here to emphasize the unholiness of others ñ or are they here to remind us that Godís holiness can be encountered ouside of the temple as well, if oneís eyes are open? A few years ago, I was in Rome with a group of people, and we were being shown round the Forum. We were in one of the temples, and our guide was explaining something about the temple, and then he drew our attention to the fact that the outside of the temple was also important, the profanum, before the temple. Clodovis Boff, among the leading methodologists of the theology of liberation, makes a similar point somewhere, that liberation theology leads both to and from the temple. 221
