SIX THINGS
ANGELS
LOVE
TO HEAR
“I know about my competition”
You’re more likely to gain investment from an Angel
if you’ve done your homework on your competition.
Your business plan will need to show you understand
your competition and outline how you will overcome
their challenge.
“I have a good idea – here’s
the proof”
Having a good idea is not enough for an Angel Investor –
you need to be able to prove the concept. Showing an
existing prototype, or proving that the service works will
greatly enhance your chances of winning Angel investment.
“I have put money into the
business already”
That’s not an admission of a failed business; it shows you
believe in your business and you don’t expect the Angel
to take all of the risks.
“I know my industry inside out”
As a rule of thumb, industry experience is not a dealbreaker
– nor is it a deal-maker – but knowing the industry
you are in is vital. Remember that the Angels themselves are
‘value-added investors’ and will contribute to your business
with more than finance.
“Here are my facts and figures”
You must be honest about every part of your business. If an
investor suspects you are telling even the tiniest of porkies,
you’ll be lucky to get the bus fare home.
“You look nice today – are those
new shoes?”
OK, so flattery won’t get you anywhere, but being friendly
will certainly help. It’s worth remembering that people invest
in people, so being personable, concise, and confident
might just put a little extra weight behind your pitch.
