3.21 Pump Seals (cont.)<br />
Recommended tools:<br />
Socket wrench - 1/2" (13mm)<br />
Allen wrench - 1/4", 5/16", 3/8"<br />
Removal:<br />
1. Remove impeller (1). See Section 3.20 Impeller.<br />
2. Pull mechanical seal (2) off impeller.<br />
3. Remove key (3) and washer(s) (4) from engine shaft.<br />
Note: The quantity of washers may vary between pumps.<br />
When removing washers, note their position and quantity<br />
on engine shaft to ensure that they will be reinstalled<br />
correctly.<br />
4. Remove four screws (5) and washers (6) mounting<br />
the pump housing (7) to the engine. Remove pump<br />
housing.<br />
5. Remove shaft seal (8) from rear of pump housing.<br />
6. Press stationary half of mechanical seal (9) out from<br />
pump housing.<br />
7. Remove sleeve (10) and any remaining washers<br />
from engine shaft for inspection or replacement.<br />
Installation:<br />
CAUTION: When handling and installing the mechanical<br />
seal, it is important to keep hands and tools clean and<br />
to avoid touching or pressing on seal faces.<br />
1. Grease shaft seal (8) using Shell Alvania #2 or<br />
equivalent. Press seal with open end facing into pump<br />
housing (7).<br />
2. Slide sleeve (10) over engine shaft. Be sure to<br />
replace any washers that were removed.<br />
Note: If the quantity or position of the washers are in<br />
doubt, install sleeve with one washer on either side.<br />
3. Press stationary half of mechanical seal (9) into pump<br />
housing.<br />
4. Slide pump housing over engine shaft being careful<br />
not to cut lip of shaft seal (8) on keyway in shaft.<br />
5. Mount pump housing (7) to engine using four screws<br />
(5) and washers (6). Apply Loctite 271 or an equivalent<br />
high strength threadlocker and torque to 16 ft.lbs<br />
(22 Nm).<br />
6. Push mechanical seal (2) completely on impeller (1).<br />
7. Install impeller (1). See Section 3.20 Impeller.<br />
