LNB (Low Noise Block)
i
How does a LNB work?
LNB or sometimes also called LNC, also known as “Low noise block” or
“Low noise converter”. These terms speak for themselves and slightly
describe the basic function of the LNB.
The programs transmitted by satellite are emitted in a very high frequency
range. This signal is not cable compatible.
This frequency range normally travels between 10.70 to 12.75GHz. The
satellite transmits the signals to the reception antenna where there are
guided to the LNB input.
The signals are then amplified and filtered. The second task of the LNB
is to convert the received frequency into a lower frequency range in
order to smoothly transmit it to the receiver via the coaxial antenna
cable.
LNB outlook
LNB is known as the reception unit being in the focal point of the parabolic
reflector. The LNB converts the extremely high incoming frequency
range transmitted by the satellite into an intermediate frequency of
the receiver. Once converted into an intermediate frequency, the incoming
signal is cable compatible. The LNB also operates as an amplifier
for the incoming signals.
LNB quality
The primary quality of a LNB is a good continuous frequency response.
Universal LNBs
LOF: 9.75/10.6GHz
In addition to the standard toggle frequency LOF = 9.75GHz, the universal
LNBs also provide a second frequency with 10.6GHz. The second
frequency enables digital reception and can be switched using the
22kHz switch signal. These LNBs can receive analogue and digital programs.
These LNB are available in the following versions:
- Single (one receiver)
- Twin: max. two receivers for analogue and digital reception.
- Quad (multiswitch, multiple receivers: For use on multiple receivers
using a multiswitch)
- Quadswitch (LNB with integrated multiswitch)
