Mixing Consoles
DJ-MIXER
Professional DJs flit in a virtuoso performance between crossfaders,
kill buttons, talk-overs etc. on a mixer, conjuring up fantastic
rhythms/beats. Our high-performance mixing consoles are
constructed in such a way that after only a short period of practice
you can achieve truly astounding results. Below, the most
common specialist terms are briefly explained.
Typical specialist terms:
Booth
Also known as a Monitor-Out or simply a Monitor. This output is available for
monitor loudspeaker systems.
Club Mixer
Larger mixer, usually in a 19" format, with several channels and a great variety
of options for allocating the input channels. Has features such as, for example,
effects, echo, monitor output, several microphone inputs with sound regulation,
etc.
Cross-Fader
Slide control used to fade two signal sources in or out against one another.
Cue (Phones)
Pre-listening function for headphones.
Echo
Sound effect whereby a signal is repeated after a short delay, usually rhythmically
within a beat.
Fader
Control which operates by being moved in a straight line, unlike dial-type controls.
Gain Control
This control makes it possible to adjust the input signal of each individual channel
before feeding to the main fader. The slide controls can all be balanced
against one another to make all sound levels the same when the fader is at the
same setting.
Kill Buttons/Kill Switches
Similar to an equalizer, you can adjust the frequency range by a fixed value
(using the button). The signal in the corresponding range is lowered by a specified
dB value. For example: Bass -26 dB (heavily muffled). This means that during
a mix, for example, the bass from the 2nd channel faded in can be brought up.
Where two pieces of music are being played simultaneously, you will certainly
hear the vocals and melodies, but the bass then comes, at the press of a button,
mainly from the second channel. There are many variations on this form of
mixing effect, since it is also possible to "switch out" the mid-tones or the high
tones. Master Signal is the stereo main sum and the signal being given out.
Punch-In Keys
Also called Punches. Short-interval switches bringing in the opposing channel on
the cross-fader while the button is kept depressed. This makes it possible to play
in fast scratches.
REC-OUT
An independent output for recording the master signal, but with a regular sound
level (e.g. for cassette or CD recordings).
Scratching
The noise which is created if you use your hand to move a disc quickly in the
direction of play and in reverse with the needle in the groove.
Talk-over
Reduces the input signals on all channels except the microphone channel, so
that the voice signal is dominant.
