HDTV
i
The HDTV (High Definition Television) is supposed to eliminate the
well-known and criticized imperfections of our television transmission
system - the aim: better resolution, more details and sharpness
and at the same time better pictures.
Projectors/video
Innovative technology provides the means to surpass small screen
sizes.
LCD and plasma TV screen sizes diagonally measuring over one
meter and projectors producing images with an almost unlimited
diagonal length have become standard items. With such large
dimensions, errors caused by poor connections are immediately
visible. Mostly caused by considerably longer cables running to the
beamer, the quality and cable construction must be attuned to
avoid picture distortion.
PAL picture (4:3)
576 line vertical
768 pixels horizontal
About 400 000 pixels
In addition to normal analogue signals, pure digital signals are also
being increasingly transmitted. Simple wiring and the uncompromised
and lossless transfer of digital data create the highest picture
quality possible. The digital transmission also makes HDTV (High
Definition TeleVision) possible.
HDTV picture (16:9)
1080 lines vertical
1920 pixels horizontal
About 2 000 000 pixels
A HDTV picture can therefore display about 5 times as much pixels
as the previous PAL picture, is thus much more sharp and shows
more details. The picture format for HDTV is always 16:9.
The signals are compressed with the MPEG 2-MP@HL method
(MP@HL: Main Profile at High Level) so that the high data rate of
the HDTV signals (max. about 25 megabits per second) can be sent.
With this video bandwidth, the required HF bandwidth for the transmission
frequency would otherwise be extremely high. An adjustment
to the MPEG 4, method which compresses even better, is
actually tested by different stations. With the Windows Media Player,
Windows XP can show HDTV in the format 720p.
HDready is a label created by the EICTA (European Information,
Communication and Consumer Electronics Industry Technology
Association) for picture reproduction devices which can replay the
HDTV transmissions. The manufacturers can put this logo on their
devices if they
- have a native (real) resolution of at least 720 lines
- have at least one analogue wide YUV component input
- possess at least one digital input (DVI or HDMI) which enables
HDCP decoding and
- if both inputs (digital/analogue) can process full pictures with
1280 x 720 (720p) and semi-pictures of 1920 x 1080 (1080i) with a
refresh rate of 50 and 60 Hz.
