Since computers are increasingly being used as video editing
equipment for processing and editing video films, the ideal IEEE
1394 interface was created to allow a quick data transfer between
a DV camcorder and computer.
The standard IEEE1394a uses three different transfer rates (100,
200 or 400Mbit/s). DV devices use the lowest speed of up to
100Mbit/s, since approximately 30Mbit/s is the effective speed
and thus can be universally connected to each interface.
Due to its increased speed (800, 1600 and 3200Mbit/s), the
latest IEEE1394b standard is bound to upstage the USB interface
(USB 2.0 = 480Mbit/s). A second data channel must be added
to allow the higher transfer rates. The 800Mbit range is used for
digital video.
4-pin FireWire: Intended for transferring digital data only. Typical
DV camcorder socket.
6-pin FireWire: With power supply. Found on computer plug-in
cards and FireWire hard drives.
9-pin FireWire: Reserved for the standard IEEE 1394b. 3 additional
wires for the second data channel enabling higher speed.
FireWire 800 is reverse compatible and thus can also be equipped
with a 9-pin to 6-pin cable or 9-pin to 4-pin cable. These features
allow the FireWire 400 devices to be connected to the new
interface.
