RESULTS AND DISCUSSION<br />
<strong>The</strong> EFI <strong>of</strong> both NaCl solutions was significantly higher than the €FI <strong>of</strong> bud<br />
pollination (Table 3.1 ). <strong>The</strong> NaCl treatments produced approximately equal €FI values.<br />
<strong>The</strong> CI <strong>of</strong> both NaCl treatrnents and the bud pollination treatment did not differ<br />
significantly (Table 3.1). All treatments promoted a similar level <strong>of</strong> self-oornpatibility.<br />
<strong>The</strong> El <strong>of</strong> both NaCl treatments was not significantly different from the bud<br />
pol lination treatment (Table 3.1 ). Approximately equal nurnbers <strong>of</strong> plants were required<br />
<strong>to</strong> produce the same amount <strong>of</strong> seed when using bud pollination or NaCl solution<br />
treatments.<br />
All treatments overcame self-incornpatibility and promoted self-pollination <strong>to</strong> a<br />
similar degree. <strong>The</strong> NaCl solution treatments were efficient, producing more seed with<br />
less time (EFI). Bud pollination is a time consuming, labour intensive process that is<br />
not any more effective at achieving seed set than NaCl solution treatments. This study
