Remarks: V. alienus (Pot.) Th. & Pf., rather common in the <strong>Middle</strong>-Late <strong>Tertiary</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Middle</strong> Europe, was only recognized in one specimen <strong>of</strong> the Jos assemblage.<br />

Botanical affinity: Polypodiaceae.<br />

Diagnostic characters: Monolete spore with bean-shaped or reniform contour in<br />

equatorial view. The sculpture <strong>of</strong> the exine consists <strong>of</strong> smooth warts (verrucae). Exine<br />

two-layered, 1.5 pm thick. Face <strong>of</strong> the spore along the dehiscence somewhat concave.<br />

Dehiscence furrow long, moderately curved.<br />

Measurements: 69 pm in length and 45.5 pm in width.<br />

Width / length ratio: 0.659.<br />

Stratigraphic range: Late Oligocene-Miocene in <strong>Middle</strong> Europe.<br />
