Lochia- discharge from the uterus during puerperium.<br />

Reaction of lochia is alkaline which favors growth of<br />

organisms<br />

Amount – varies with each woman<br />

Odour- heavy <strong>and</strong> unpleasant but not offensive<br />

<strong>The</strong> lochia undergo sequential change as involution<br />

progresses.<br />

1. Lochia Rubra – Red in colour last 1-4 days consists of<br />

blood, chorion, decidua, amniotic fluid, lanugo, vernix<br />

caseosa <strong>and</strong> meconium.<br />

2. Lochia serosa – purple, lasts 5-9 days contains less<br />

blood more serum as well as leukocytes & organisms.<br />

3. Lochia alba – creamish pale discharge lasts 9-12 days<br />

N:B: It is important that midwife/nurse realize the danger of<br />

retained products which is indicated persistent red lochia .<br />

Changes in other body system<br />

Urinary tract – Physiological changes which occurred during<br />

pregnancy are reversed. <strong>The</strong> urinary tract is revived from<br />

pressure of delivery.<br />

Alimentary canal:- Heart burn improves due to hormonal fall<br />

<strong>and</strong> released pressure on the sphincter. Constipation presents<br />

for few days; painful perineum inhibits defecation.<br />

Circulatory system:- blood volume decreases to pregravid<br />

level & blood regains its normal viscosity. Muscle tone of<br />
