NORMAL PREGNANCY<br />

At the end of this chapter the students will be able to<br />

- Describe the physiology of pregnancy<br />

- list the methods of diagnosis of pregnancy<br />

- Describe stage of embryological development<br />

- Describe placental abnormalities <strong>and</strong> its consequencies<br />

- Enumerate the functions of placenta<br />

- Describe placental abnormalities <strong>and</strong> its consequencies<br />

- Identify major care given for pregnant women during<br />

pregnancy<br />

3.1 Conception<br />

Other terms used to describe this phenomenon are<br />

fertilization, impregnation or fecundation.<br />

Definition -Fertilization is the union of the ovum <strong>and</strong> a<br />

sepermatozoa.<br />

Fertilization must occur fairly quickly after release of the ovum<br />

because it usually occurs in the outer third of a fallopian tube,<br />
