As impressive, instructive, safe, and
fun as recreational formation flying
can be, the FAA will not accept “my
lead took me there” as an excuse
for a violation. More importantly, it
will be little consolation to the family
to hear the pilot was unwise enough
to follow a hobbyist formation lead
into a deadly crash. Formation flying
involves skill and trust, but despite
emulating a military operation it is
not a “mission.” The temptation to
“get there” in a mass arrival, to honor
the fallen in a fly-over at a funeral,
to complete a formation training
session, to impress the crowd at a
gathering or air show, or to be the
formation lead cannot overshadow
the need to verify safe altitudes,
maintain spacing, change which
airplane is in the lead if needed, or
scrub the flight if ceiling or visibility
is too low or winds or turbulence are
too great.
Watch your lead, but make your
own decisions. You are the pilot-incommand,
and totally responsible
for the conduct and outcome of your
flight…even more so when operating
in close proximity to other aircraft
and obstructions.
