Cylinder Failure
By Tom Rosen, Chairman, ABS Technical Committee
The photos are of my #4 cylinder, an investment cast Millennium,
that failed 50 hours after overhaul. If you look closely, you can
see that the crack extends well to the left of the valve seat.
The interesting part, and
the reason I am sharing this
with ABS members, is that I
discovered the crack while
complying with the Superior/
Millennium Airworthiness
Direc tive. The compression
was 67/80, compared to the
low 70s for the other five.
Fuel Pump
Replacement
C J Aviation in Miami, Florida
(305-378-1469) now has a PMA
replacement electric boost pump
to replace the Dukes pump in
Bonanzas and Barons. The price
is comparable for overhaul and
only slightly higher for a new
pump. They will take the old
Dukes pump as an exchange for
the new PMA pump.
Not remarkable at all. Visual
inspection of the cylinder
was normal. I never would
have found the crack if my
air compressor had been
running, because I would
not have heard the sound
of air escaping through
the crack. The soapy water
test confirmed the leak on the left side of the head, way down against the
#6 cylinder. There was almost no visible evidence of combustion products on
the exterior of the cylinder head with the cylinder installed.
As a result of this, I now always accomplish compression checks with the
compressor turned off while I am taking the readings in a quiet hangar.
