ranging from 2000-2001 to late model
vehicles and determined that redesigned
SUVs and trucks in newer model years
were dramatically lower in crash deaths.
The numbers were substantially better
for SUVs than pickups which often carry
larger and heavier loads than SUVs.
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport continues to be a hot seller
for the automaker. The model will be manufactured in Illinois
next year.
Mitsubishis are hot. Mitsubishi
Motors North America (MMNA) said its
September sales marked a 13-month
increase in units sold. Year-to-date sales for
the first nine months of 2011 are up 59
percent, outpacing overall U.S. auto sales.
For September, sales of 5,803 units
represented a 17-percent increase over
September 2010.
“Consumers continue to be drawn to the
styling, performance, and fuel efficiency of
our Outlander Sport,” President and CEO
Yoichi Yokozawa said.
“Our momentum should be further
enhanced as we launch a major advertising
campaign that focuses on next year’s
Outlander Sport launch at our U.S.
manufacturing facility in Normal, Ill., and
November’s sales launch of the Mitsubishi
i,” Yokozawa said.
The launch will take place in the Pacific
Northwest and California.
Beetle R debuts. Volkswagen
introduced its new Beetle R Concept at the
recent Frankfurt Motor Show. While
specifics have not yet
been released, industry
analysts have said this
model may be in
production next year.
The Beetle has been
described by VW as the
“sportiest Beetle ever,”
and with 20-inch wheels,
new front and rear
fascias, two sets of dualchrome
tailpipes, a rear
spoiler, and other
exterior detailing, this is
an exciting model. It will
most likely be equipped
with a 2.0L turbo engine found in other
VW models.
The concept car shown in Frankfurt had
racing-style seats wrapped in black leather
and pedals with aluminum caps. Blue and
black color accents were used as well.
Volkswagen of America reported strong
results for September, up 35.6 percent over
2010 on sales of 27,036 units. For the year,
U.S. sales are up more than 22 percent.
The first of the Chattanooga, Tenn.-
built Passats sold 3,176 units in
September. Clean-diesel TDI models
accounted for 22.7 percent of U.S. sales
for Volkswagen. n
