trucks each year,” he said.
“In the service arena, we do everything
from lighting to electrical, brakes to
engines,” he said. “Our goal at Motor
Trucks is to take care of all of our
customer’s needs.”
In that vein, the stores offer mobile truck
service with units constructed for that
purpose in the service department, Woody
said, adding that the mobile service
represents about 10 percent of overall
service sales.
Training is an important element of the
service department, Woody said, as trucks
have transitioned to cleaner diesels and
become more electronically controlled since
the mid-2000s.
“No one has the same engine in their
trucks today that they had in 2005,” he said.
“Government regulations on diesel engines
and fuel economy in 2007 and 2010 have
changed what we work on today, so training
for engines and the electronics on the trucks
is very different than it was before.”
Training for technicians and support staff
is a mix of class offerings from
International, Eaton, classes at Bates
Technical College in Tacoma, and in-house
web-based training, Woody said. “We have

said. In addition, an
upstairs training room
can accommodate 50
people with tables and
is used for Motor
Trucks and other training, he said.
The parts department, headed by Garrett
Horgen, who handles parts for all three
Motor Trucks store, provides delivery
service from Kent to the Canadian border to
the Cascade Mountains, as well as the
Olympic Peninsula, Woody said.
The parts department has an inventory of
about $850,000, Horgen said.
During the construction of the new
facility, Woody said ownership and
managers were able to provide input on
design elements and fixtures that were to be
incorporated into the new building.
“The building was designed to be
environmentally friendly, and energy use
was a major consideration,” he said. “We
had a waste-oil burner in our old building,
but we put in two Columbia waste-oil units
from Northwest Industrial Equipment here
in an upstairs control room above the
service department.
“Last year, we burned 9,000 gallons of
used oil. We heat the entire building with
the units, saving on utility costs, and we
don’t have the liability of recycling of oils
with an outside firm,” Woody said.
Clear-glass doors were installed in the
service department to add additional light,
and skylights in the 32-foot ceiling provide
more available light to the service area,
Woody said.
The parts crew at Motor Trucks in Everett at the retail parts
counter are, from l., Parts Manager Garrett Horgen and Parts
Specialists Curtis Davis, Steve Lage, Darren Joplin, and Jon
Mattson.
“We also tinted the concrete gray to add
to the lighting issue, and it all works very
well. There are times we used very little
energy in lighting the service area.”
A fresh-air intake system was installed in
the control room so that fumes and air
issues are handled well, and a dieselparticulate
cleaning system was also
included in the service department, Woody
said.
An environmentally sound lube pit, the
first in Washington, drains into a separator
and does not allow for fluids to enter the
service or work areas, Woody said. In
addition, there are two air compressors that
work as energy savers, and a water
treatment system is in place as well, he
added. n
